What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure which involves the removal of infected or damaged tissue from inside the tooth. A cavity can often cause parts of the inner structure of the tooth to become exposed and damaged, resulting in infection and pain. The nerve within the tooth is often affected when a cavity forms, which may cause sensitivity in the surrounding area and pain when biting or eating.

The injured pulp is removed from the tooth and any dead tissue surrounding it during a root canal. The area is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to ensure that any healthy tissue is safe from further infection. It is then filled and sealed with a crown, inlay or onlay to protect your tooth’s original structure and provide extra strength and durability.

When You May Need a Root Canal

If you require a root canal, it is important to act on the matter as early as possible to save your tooth and prevent the infection from spreading. Look out for the following signs & symptoms:

  • Severe tooth pain when biting or chewing

  • Dull continuous or shooting pain in your teeth or jaw

  • Tooth sensitivity to touch and temperature that worsens over time

  • Tender or swollen gums near a tooth

  • Pus-filled pimple in the gums around a sore tooth

  • Darkening or discolouration of the tooth

  • Chipped or cracked teeth

  • Bad breath

If you face any symptoms listed above, book an appointment with our endodontist at the earliest! We will evaluate your situation and recommend a suitable treatment plan for you.

Root Canal Procedure

A root canal procedure includes the following steps:

  • Your dentist gives you a local anesthetic to numb the area of your mouth around the affected tooth.

  • Your dentist then places a rubber dam around the tooth being treated to protect it from infection.

  • After, we make an opening in the tooth to reach the root canal system and the damaged pulp.

  • With the help of dental instruments, the pulp chamber will be cleaned out, and the canal will be disinfected with an antibacterial and antiseptic solution.

  • After that, your dentist will use a filling material to fill the canals. It is placed inside the canal, heated and compressed to fit properly against the walls and then sealed.

  • Your dentist will also seal the hole made to access the canals. If your tooth is severely damaged and cannot support restoration on its own, they will place a post to strengthen the tooth.

  • Depending on the condition of your tooth, you will either be sent home with a short antibiotics course or go straight to a final sitting to set the crown. Dental crowns are placed around the treated tooth to add strength and stability so that you can resume chewing and eating without any discomfort.

Root canal treatment can be done in 1 or 2 appointments, after which your tooth may be tender for the first week or two. Please speak to dentists to book your root canal check-up.
