Your mouth, teeth and gums are the main entry point into your body and its first defense keeping healthy. When things go wrong in your mouth, your general health can be affected. In many cases, your gums act as an early warning system.
According to the Canadian Dental Association (CDA), gum disease is one of the most common dental problems adults face, but gum disease can begin at just about any age, and often develops slowly without causing any pain. You may not even notice any signs until the disease is serious and you are in danger of losing teeth or even bone tissue. Gum Disease is the most common dental problem and seven out of 10 Canadians will develop gum disease at some time in their lives. Healthy gums and bone hold teeth firmly in place. Gums attach to teeth just below the edge of the gums where tartar forms. Tartar, a buildup of plaque (bacteria) cannot be removed by brushing and flossing and if left untreated, can lead to an infection at the point where the gums attach to the teeth known as gingivitis. Gingivitis produces swelling, bleeding, or colour changes in your gums. Over time the infection breaks down the gum tissue that attaches to the teeth, eventually causing the bone that holds your teeth in place to break down too or full out gum disease. Prevention is the most important factor in the fight against gum disease. Brush your teeth properly at least twice a day and floss at least once every 24 hours to keep your teeth and gums clean. You should also check your gums on a regular basis for these signs of gum disease:
a change in the colour of your gums;
gums that are red around your teeth;
gums that bleed every time you brush or floss;
bad breath that will not go away;
a taste of metal in your mouth;
shiny, puffy or sore gums; or
teeth that are sensitive for no reason.
These are all good reasons to see your dentist right away. Gum disease is one of the main reasons why adults lose their teeth but it can be treated and can even be turned around (or reversed) in its early stages.
