Six Tips to Prevent Cavities

According to Health Canada, 96% of adults, 59% of teenagers, and 24% of children have at least one dental cavity. That's a lot of cavities!

Our teeth play an essential role in our lives, and it’s important that we take good care of them. The good news is that with a few simple tips and changes in habits, you can improve your dental hygiene and prevent cavities. Read on for our list of six simple and effective ways to prevent cavities and improve our dental health.

What Causes Cavities?

Cavities are caused by tooth decay that damages both the enamel, which is the outer coating of the tooth and the inner dentin, which is part of the tooth tissue.

When you don’t brush your teeth regularly, the buildup of bacteria will turn food particles into acid. The acid then turns into plaque, which sticks to the teeth, dissolves the enamel and creates small holes in our teeth—otherwise known as cavities.

Tips for Cavity Prevention

Cavity prevention can be simple if we develop good oral health habits and follow the advice of our dental professionals. Here are six tips that will help you prevent cavities in the future.

1. Brush Your Teeth Well and Often

Brushing your teeth is the first line of defence against the development of cavities and an integral part of your dental hygiene regimen. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and or after every meal, if possible.

2. Flossing

Flossing is an essential part of your dental health routine. Daily flossing helps remove the food particles that get trapped in between your teeth that are out of reach of your toothbrush.

3. Consider Fluoride Toothpaste

Fluoride helps protect your teeth by slowing down acid production in your mouth and by strengthening the enamel of your teeth. Consider switching to recommended brands of toothpaste that come with added fluoride and stay on top of your dental hygiene.

4. Evaluate Your Diet

Sugar is a big offender when it comes to the development of cavities. Try to eat a well-balanced diet that is low in added sugar and limit your intake of sugary drinks. Another tip is to drink water after eating, as it washes away some of the bacteria that cause cavities.

5. Consider Dental Sealants

A dental sealant is a coating that is applied to the surface of your teeth that protects them against tooth decay and cavities. It acts as a barrier between the surface of your tooth and the bacteria in your mouth.

6. Visit Your Dentist Regularly

The most important part of any dental hygiene and cavity prevention plan is to schedule regular dental check-ups, teeth cleanings and exams. Routine cleanings can go a long way toward cavity prevention and maintaining healthy teeth.

Working Together to Prevent Cavities

The best way to prevent cavities is by working alongside your dental professional to create an effective dental hygiene plan. Regular dental check-ups, daily brushing, flossing and dietary choices will help you achieve and maintain excellent oral and dental health.
